Happy, Healthy Aging…Part 1

Welcome guest blogger, Maureen McDonnell!  Maureen has been a holistic, nutritionally-oriented RN for 37 years.  She is the health editor of WNC Woman Magazine, the Medical Coordinator of the Imus Ranch for Kids with Cancer in New Mexico, the cofounder of Saving Our Kids, Healing Our Planet (SOKHOP.com).   Maureen spends her days researching, writing and presenting on ways we can optimize our health by consuming nutrient-dense, whole foods, reducing our exposure to toxins and practicing happiness. She lives with her husband H in the amazing mountains of North Carolina and is blessed with 7 grandchildren.  Over the next couple of weeks Maureen will give us three steps to achieve healthy aging.

Although we don’t see these 3 words (happy, healthy and aging) together too often, the phrase has become my mantra!   After listening closely to the advice of healthy-aging experts such as Christiane Northrup, MD and Andrew Weil, MD and applying some of the tips conveyed by the much admired 84 year old successful, happy and healthy author Louise Hay, I’ve compiled the following list of suggestions to help us all feel our best as we move healthfully and gracefully through the aging process.

Tip #1 for Healthy Aging:

Quieting the Mind:  As an advocate of healthy eating and exercise, you would think that listing health-promoting, whole foods and supplements would top my list of happy, healthy aging tips.   However, I have seen people consume the most nutritious food in the world and take the best supplements and still be unhealthy and miserable. Negative thoughts and excess mind chatter lead to the production of cortisol, a hormone released from the adrenal glands in response to mental or physical stress.  Cortisol then leads to  elevated blood sugar levels, deposits of fat in our lower abdomen, raises cholesterol, elevates blood pressure and can contribute to hormone imbalance.

Research demonstrates that setting aside a few minutes each day to slow down our thoughts and calm our mind can have tremendous physical and mental health benefits[1].
